BIRD & BERRIES - Painting Feathers

BIRD & BERRIES
Watercolor - 11x14

I always enjoy painting birds, especially cute little ones sitting in a tree. I began painting the bird by wetting the paper and putting in soft color for the base of the feathers. When that dried, I used a lot of small, dry brushstrokes and just kept building up the texture and shadows on the body of the bird..

For the background, I wet the paper first and started painting some of the evergreen branches and needles. When it was dry, I added more needles using green, burnt sienna and some blue. I think he looks very happy sitting in his evergreen tree among the bright red berries!
