I LOVE negative painting! Negative painting is where you paint the space around the subject instead of painting the subject which is the positive space. It is especially important in watercolor because you can't paint light colors on top of darks (painting pink roses on top of greens). So, instead you paint the dark colors (green) around the subject (roses) to define them and make them appear lighter.
