Memories in the Making is the Alzheimer's Association art program for people with dementia. When words become harder to use thoughts, ideas and memories can still be communicated thru art.
As the MIM coordinator for Colorado Springs, CO I give a facilitator's training twice a year. Staff from the care communities along with people interested in volunteering learn about the purpose of the program, how to lead a group and how to encourage the artists - they even get time to enjoy the painting process themselves.
At the end of the day they pair up and role play as the facilitator and the artist to get a better idea of some of the challenges facing the artists. It is always a wonderful day of sharing and learning!
