GARDEN DELIGHT & Saving Your Whites

GARDEN DELIGHT
Watercolor - 11x14

One of the biggest challenges with painting in watercolor is that you must save the white of the paper instead of using white paint. You can mask your white shapes before you begin painting or you can try and save them during the initial wet on wet stage.

For Garden Delight I made a general sketch of where I wanted my flowers and tried to leave those areas white while I painted in the soft background of blues and greens. When everything was dry, I used negative painting to define the petals of the white flowers while also putting in the stems and leaves in the background.
