STARRY NIGHT & Saving the Whites

STARRY NIGHT
Watercolor - 11x14

Because watercolor paints are transparent it is not advised to use any white paint in your composition. White paint is opaque by nature and will stand out against the true watercolor paints. You must plan ahead and save the white of the paper either by painting around the shapes or using a masking fluid to protect the paper until you are finished.

I used masking fluid for the snow on the big evergreen tree, some of the trees in the background and spattered some in the sky to suggest stars. I left most of the foreground alone so that the white paper would suggest snow, painting in a few shadows.

I removed the masking fluid and added details and shadows to the buildings and trees.
