HOLLYHOCKS - Watercolor Batik

HOLLYHOCKS
Watercolor Batik - 12x19

For eight years I coordinated the art program for the Alzheimer's Association in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It is a wonderful program called Memories in the Making where people with dementia get together each week and use watercolors to create art. As their ability to express themselves verbally diminishes they are still able to use art as a form of expression and a way to tell the stories of their lives.

One of my favorite stories came from a cute lady who said when she was growing up on a farm everyone would plant hollyhocks next to their outhouse. That way, if a young lady was visiting she could politely ask 'where do your hollyhocks grow' when she needed to powder her nose.
