I have many fond memories of family vacations at the beach, growing up in Texas. The sun, sand, shells and waves provided so much fun and I very much appreciate my parents for providing that for us.

- Change the format from horizontal to vertical
- Zoom into one small section and make it the focus
- Lower the horizon and make the sky play a bigger role
- Change the time of day or conditions for a different motive out a road or add one in
- Change the shapes and sizes of trees or greenery
- Use a different color scheme
Remember that the photo is for creative inspiration and the goal is to end up with an exciting new piece of art!

It is easy to get in a rut with color choices so I gave myself a Creative Challenge to use different colors for a seascape. For Sailboat Fancy I used strong shades of turquoise and phthalo blue for the ocean water and added bold strokes of gold and pink in the sky and rocks.
I also gessoed the surface of the watercolor paper to provide a slick surface which allows for a very painterly look to the final piece.

It is always fun to paint a seascape but dealing with moving water is not always an easy task. When I am painting any body of water - stream, lake, waterfall, ocean - I always wet the paper first so that when I start applying the paint I get nice, soft edges.
For the calm area of the ocean in the back I used horizontal strokes and as I moved into the rolling wave I started curving my lines to suggest the movement of the wave. I made sure that I kept areas of white and used different shades of blues - ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, indigo and turquoise - over the whole body of water.

Don't you just love lighthouses? There is something romantic and majestic about them. Sitting high up in the sky to provide a beacon of light for those full of dreams!
I used an image of one of my original watercolor lighthouse paintings and added a heartfelt quote to design this print that can be slipped in to a frame for yourself or to give as a gift. I LOVE the beach and have so many fond memories of family vacations at South Padre Island in Texas. We always went the week before school started and built sand castles, jumped the waves and caught crabs in the evening.
For Beach Dunes I collaged very thin rice paper to add texture and visual interest to the composition.

A NEW DAY & Vertical Brush Strokes

The majority of the time when I paint a sky I use horizontal brush strokes, so I decided to change things ups a bit for A New Day. I first wet the paper for the sky area and then brushed on shades of turquoise and mauve using vertical strokes and being careful to save some white areas.
It is always good to shake thing up a bit every once in a while and stretch yourself creatively!
