TULIP DELIGHT Creative Challenge - Repetition

I gave myself the Creative Challenge to use repetition, one of the principles of design, to create unity within the art work. With Spring Tulips I repeated the shape of the tulip with five main flowers and was careful to make one of them larger for the focal point. I varied the size of the other four and even though they all have similar colors I used more contrast on and around the main tulip. There is also repetition with the shapes of the leaves and the colors that are woven throughout the whole composition.

The Creative Challenge this week was to be more spontaneous with my artwork. For Joy, I began with wet paper and applied different shades of yellows and oranges for the sunflowers with some blue in the background. I let the paint run freely to create more organic shapes and then placed plastic wrap on the wet paint to create interesting textures.
When the paint was dry I removed the plastic and began using negative painting to further define the sunflower petals. I also used corrugated cardboard to stamp in criss cross lines here and there.

It is always a Creative Challenge to paint quickly, especially in watercolor. For Just Peachy, I wet both sides of the paper and applied color quickly, trying to get as much of the composition in place as I could before the paper dried. I managed to place the flowers, buds, stems and a few leaves. As the top of the paper began to dry, some of the water was still trapped on the back side, keeping the paper moist enough that I could continue getting soft edges as I began to define shapes with some negative painting.
After the paper was completely dry, I continued to refine shapes, add details and finished with some calligraphy - a few twigs and stems.
ROSE TRIBUTE - Creative Challenge - Odd Is Better

The Creative Challenge is to use an odd number of items in your composition. For Rose Tribute I used three roses as the main focus of the composition. I began this painting with wet paper and a free application of bright colors, placing the pink and peachy colors in the areas I wanted the main flowers. When all was dry I used negative painting to define the flowers and leaves.

Creative Challenge - focus on value in your painting. I used different shades of watercolor to create a strong value pattern in Touch of Purple, painting the darkest darks right next to the lightest lights in my focal area. I used the whole value scale from almost black to white but did not use a lot of variation in the mid tones. Keeping my brushstrokes loose and painterly created movement throughout the painting.
We often focus more on color than actual the actual value of those colors. It can be helpful to view your painting in black and white so that you can clearly see if you have a range of lights and darks and if your value pattern provides a strong composition.
What Shall I Name It?

I realized the other day that I have a lot, and I mean a lot, of paintings of pink flowers. I think I like to use that opera color a little too much so I have been trying to change things up a bit with my florals. Now, I need a little help with a name for this one - any suggestions?

Before I mounted Solitary Song I covered the stretched canvas with decorative tissue paper that coordinates with the painting. The finished piece is ready to display by hanging it on the wall, propping on a shelf or using a small easel.

I am always on the look out for different ways to display my watercolor paintings so I decided to try mounting them on a stretched canvas. I first painted the canvas a coordinating lavender color, using a sponge and two different shades to create a little contrast and texture. Because the canvas is gallery wrapped there are no staples showing along the edge so after I mounted the 140 lb watercolor paper to the canvas it was ready to display - either by hanging on the wall, propped on a shelf or on a decorative easel!

I wet both sides of the paper to create a soft background for these big, bold flowers. The paper stays wet longer so that I can take my time adding form and detail to the watercolor.

Sunflowers and A New Computer

Well, it has been a few weeks since I have been able to post because my computer decided to totally shut down. Luckily, we were able to retrieve everything and transfer it over to a new computer. I decided to live dangerously and switched from a PC to a Mac - luckily our son is home and can tutor me on using a completely new system. I am slowly adjusting to it but love my new Mac so far!

For Textures of Spring I decided to do something a little different and combined acrylics with painted tissue and rice paper for a mixed media collage painting. Because i used a gallery wrapped canvas it is ready to hang as is or can be placed in a standard size frame.
You can see in this detail photo that the collaged papers really add a lot of texture and interest to the flowers and leaves. The beauty of this technique is that you can paint, collage, paint and collage some more until you are staisfied with the final piece!

A common complaint among artists is that it is sometimes hard to get 'In the creative zone.' I would like to share 5 ways that often help me get and stay in that artistic place we all love to be.
The first, is to trick yourself into getting started working on something creative. We often think we need a lot of open time in our schedule to sit down and paint but if you tell yourself you have 5 minutes to fool around you will soon be hooked and realize that you actually do have time to be creative.
My Mom, the Color Pink and Great Memories

I grew up in an older house with a lot of charm and my mom decorated the guest room in soft shades of pink with antique furniture. There are twin beds and many feminine touches so it was the perfect room for our two girls to stay in whenever we visited. Soft Light is my tribute to the wonderful times we always have visiting my parents in Texas.
