SPRING JEWELS & Watercolor Texture

SPRING JEWELS
Watercolor - 11x14

With watercolor you can't create real, tactile texture with the thin paint like you can with oils or acrylics so we have to rely on tricks to give the illusion of texture. Using plastic wrap on wet paint is one of those fun tricks.

I began painting Spring Jewels by wetting the paper and then applying fun, jewel colors randomly over the entire area. While the paint was still wet, I placed plastic wrap over the paint and left it to dry. When the plastic was removed it had created a patchwork of color that was perfect for a bouquet of flowers. I lightly drew in the vase and flower and then used negative painting to pull the shapes forward and add definition. If you are a tight painter this is a great way to loosen yourself up and learn how to go with the flow!
