OLD WAGON by Colorado Artist Martha Kisling

Watercolor 11x15
Ask any of my students and they will tell you that my favorite way to paint with watercolor is to 'negative paint'. I began this painting by wetting the paper and applying juicy background colors of yellow ochre, Antwerp blue and some mauve in random order. When everything was dry, I came in with dark values to negative paint the wagon, wheel and boards on the shed using the colors already in the under painting for a unified look to the composition.

  1. Hi Martha, love the colors in this painting and the way you applied the 'negative paint'.
