SOUTHERN JEWELS
Watercolor on gesso - 15x20
I applied several coats of white gesso to 140 lb watercolor paper before I began this painting. When the gesso was dry I randomly applied shades of mauve and blue, leaving some areas white for blossoms. I carefully added more darks using negative painting to define the flowers.
Painting on a slick surface allows the colors to stay bright and true and gives a painterly look to the finished piece. It is also easy to lift the paint to further refine the shapes of the white petals.
