When I paint trees with watercolor I generally try to simplify their shapes. Here are a few hints:
Look at the overall shape of the tree. Is it oval? Round? Block in the big, simple shape
Make the edges of your tree shape interesting, not just smooth and perfect
Pay attention to the way the branches grow
Vary the colors you use for the foliages, shades of green, blue and browns
Use a big brush to paint the trees and keep it loose
