Focal Points and A Rose Bouquet

LOVE LIKE A ROSE
Watercolor - 11x15

So what exactly is a Focal Point? Or as it is often called - the Center of Interest? It is the area of your painting that you want the viewer to focus in on.

You can establish the focal point in several ways - it can be the largest object, have the brightest color, the most contrast and/or the greatest detail. In the painting above I had several roses in the bouquet but made one larger than the others and added more darks in the background around it and a little more detail in the petals. Hopefully, your eye travels all over the paintings but eventually settles on the large rose.
