We tackled lighthouses in my Tuesday morning watercolor class and used masking fluid to save our whites. Masking is a wonderful way to protect a shape so that you can freely brush paint across the wet paper - in this case to paint the sky - and not get any color on your lighthouse or other shape. Remember to use an old brush and wipe it on a bar of soap first so that it will be easier to clean up.
