Roses and A White Picket Fence

ROSE GARDEN
Watercolor - 11x15

As many of you know I LOVE to use negative painting in my watercolors. Negative painting is where you paint the 'negative space' around the 'positive space' of the object. It is especially important in watercolor because the only way to make an object appear lighter is to paint darker around it.
After I began this painting, I decided to add a white picket fence in the background. I lightly sketched it in and then used shades of green and blue to paint around the fence to pull it forward and make it appear lighter. I also did more negative painting around the roses and leaves.
