Colors That Complement

FLOWER DANCE
Original Watercolor - 11x15

The Daily Paintworks challenge a few weeks ago was to use a complementary color scheme in a painting. Complementary colors are opposite each other on the color wheel and when put next to each other they bring out the best in each other - when mixed together they create a neutral or grey. I tell my students that an easy way to remember the complements are red and green for Christmas, yellow and purple for Easter and when I get to blue and orange everyone says the Denver Broncos. If you don't have a football team with those colors you can stretch it a little and use Halloween to remember.

In Flower Dance I used yellow and purple as complements and some accents of orange and turquoise. To check out the other paintings in the challenge click here.
