Aspen Tree Watercolor Collage and Carriage in Breckenridge

ASPEN GREENS
Watercolor Collage
SOLD

One of the workshops I taught while in Breckenridge, CO was Watercolor Collage where we combined paint and textured tissue and rice papers. I began by masking out the aspen trees and then painting a wet on wet background and rock area. I colored the tissue and rice papers with similar watercolors and then collaged them in the foreground for added texture. I removed the masking and painted details on the trees to finish it all up.

I could not resist taking a picture of the beautiful horse drawn carriage surrounded by snow and holiday lights on Main Street Breckenridge.

Breckenridge Snowboard Street Course and a Large Iris

IRIS DELIGHT
Watercolor 11x15

I love painting irises and began this watercolor by weting both sides of the paper which allows you to have more time to paint soft shapes. When all was dry I used alot of negative painting to define the petals and leaves.
While my daughter Lisa and I were staying in Breckenridge, Colorado at the Tin Shop in their Arts district, they came in and created the first ever street course for snow boarders right outside our front door. It was a festive eveing and great fun to watch as they slid down the bed of a huge semi truck, jumped over a van and used trash dumpsters to grind over - very exciting!

Watercolor Collage of Barn in Breckenridge, CO

COUNTRY LIVING
Watercolor Collage 11x15

It is such a treat to have the time and space to focus on your art without interruption. I feel very blessed to have this time in Breckenridge, CO as their Artist in Residence. I combined collage with watercolor for this painting of a barn. The painted rice papers add such wonderful texture to the rocks, barn and trees and also loosen up your painting style.
I will be teaching a Watercolor Collage Workshop on January 19, 2013 where you can explore this painting and collage technique. You can see details for all my workshops here

Sunflowers in Breckenridge, Colorado

FOLLOW THE SUN
Watercolor 11x15

Well, there are not really any sunflowers right now here in the mountains of Breckenridge, CO but they are blooming brightly here in the studio. This was one of many half finished paintings I brought with me to the Tin Shop to complete - always a good feeling to push past the mid-painting blues and get it done. It helps that sunflowers are one of my favorite subjects to paint.
I am thrilled that our middle daughter, Lisa, could join me for my stay in Breckenridge to play, hang out and create. Here she is working on one of her watercolor batiks - a fun, smart and creative girl!

Snow and the Color Magenta

WINTER DAY
Watercolor 8x10

I thought if I posted a painting of snow we might get some here in the mountains of Breckenridge, CO - the ski areas are in desperate need of it. Meanwhile, I am enjoying the lovely warm weather and having a great time painting, playing and experimenting with all sorts of things. This morning I spent time painting papers with acrylics to use in collage paintings - we will see where that leads me!.
Winter Day was included in an Etsy Treasury titled Magenta Madness. You can see more of this colorful collection here
